In Black comicdom, there’s more to the story of Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story than just its effectiveness in popularizing non-violent protest.

For many this iconic comic book is recognized as the progenitor of Black Non-Fiction Comics along with the earlier J.A. Rogers’ Your History serials and Fawcett Publications’ Joe Lewis and Jackie Robinson series. At a time when fictional comics popularity was waning do to the pressures of the comic code authority, these books forged a lane for our stories to be thrive in glorious comic book fashion.

Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story is a 16-page comic book about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Montgomery bus boycott published in 1957 by The Montgomery Bus Boycott Committee.

Although ignored by the mainstream comics industry, The Montgomery Story, was widely distributed among civil rights groups, churches, and schools. It helped inspire movements around the Southern United States, and later in Latin America, South Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Less than 20 years later it would inspire the launch of Golden Legacy Publication’s Black History Comic Book company and 50 years after its initial publication, the best-selling, award-winning March Trilogy by Georgia Congressman John Lewis.

These ground breaking books stand as the honored Mt. Rushmore for the founding of Hardihood Illustrated as we strive to continue their traditional legacy of historical comic art storytelling.
